Prentiss Douthit

Prentiss Douthit thinks of his artwork as words come to life. Prentiss Douthit is a visual artist, one whose work intends to initiate a conversation. Prentiss Douthit sees the visual stories that he paints as a platform for the stories which might not be written but are lingering in the background. His aesthetic blends tasteful refinement with a distinctive charm, approachability, and a sense of humor.

Prentiss Douthit was born and raised in Decatur, Alabama. He earned a BFA degree in both graphic design and painting from the University of Montevallo, a small liberal arts college in the center of the state of Alabama. After graduating from college, Prentiss worked as a graphic designer for the next twenty years. He developed and ran his own design and advertising business. For a short time, at the beginning of his design career, he began painting portraits but after a short while, he put his brushes aside and focused on his design and advertising business.

In 2012, Prentiss Douthit left the state of Alabama and moved to Austin, Texas. Besides working on his art, he became the Executive Director for the Hill Country Ride for AIDS, the largest AIDS fundraising organization in Central Texas. Some time after he settled into his new home in Austin, Texas, after taking an unflinching look at his own shadows and with an unwavering determination to turn them into light, Prentiss Douthit picked up his brushes and began painting again. In 2017, Prentiss produced a series of paintings for a near sellout show at the Lewis Carnegie Gallery in East Austin and in 2018, his work was exhibited at another one - artist show in Birmingham, Alabama.
