Vera Wang Papers are distinctive because they incorporate a unique blend of sophistication, charm, modernity and elegance. They have the same sense of design, detailing and proportion as her namesake high-end clothing line. The modern, sophisticated style of Vera Wang is captured perfectly in her papers, a couture collection that epitomizes the unexpected, exquisite details for which her designs have always been known. The Vera Wang Holiday Card Collection is inspired by Vera Wang’s incomparable style, incorporating timeless elegance, sensual textures and touches of luxe fashion in the design of fine Christmas and Holiday greeting and photo cards.
Vera Wang, a NYC native, began figure skating at age eight and competed in the 1968 US Figure Skating Championships. When she failed to make the US Olympics team she entered the fashion industry. After graduating with a degree in art history from Sarah Lawrence College in the New York City suburbs, she was hired to be an editor at Vogue magazine, making her the youngest editor at that magazine. She stayed at Vogue for 17 years, leaving in 1987 to join Ralph Lauren, for whom she worked for two years. In 1989, she resigned and became an independent bridal wear designer, and opened her own design salon in the elegant Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue in the exclusive upper East Side of Manhattan.
Vera Wang has made wedding gowns for public figures such as Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Ivanka Trump, Chelsea Clinton and her evening wear has been worn by Michelle Obama. She was honored with the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
Additionally, she designed costumes for figure skaters, including Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan and Nathan Chen. Nancy Kerrigan wore Vera Wang designed costumes for the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and Chen for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Vera Wang was inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2009 for her contribution to the sport of figure skating as a costume designer.
Besides exquisite wedding gowns and sophisticated figure skating costumes, Vera Wang has expanded her brand to include fragrance, jewelry, eyewear, shoes, homeware and beautiful invitations and holiday cards. Vera Wang Papers currently is a division of Crane & Co. and is located in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts.
Vera Wang's elegant paper is the ideal canvas for the specialty printing they offer to their customers. The standard greeting that you select or the custom text that you personalize for your invitations and Christmas and holiday greeting and photo cards will be printed in your choice of a wide array of ink colors, typestyles, and in your choice of printing method: flat (lithography), thermography (raised lettering), foil stamping, and traditional engraving.
What is perhaps the most traditional and elegant printing processes, classic engraving is a Vera Wang specialty. When one runs one's fingers over a piece of engraved stationery, one feels the texture unique to engraving: finely detailed, raised letters with slight indentations on the reverse side of the paper. To create this look, the image is etched into a copper plate. The plate is inked, then the paper is forced against the plate with tremendous pressure, drawing the ink from the depressed areas. Engraving dies are returned to the customer and can be used again to replenish one’s stationery or to create a new look with different paper and ink.
Foil stamping uses plates that are created with the printing areas raised above the non-printing areas of the plate. Heat is applied and the foil is then placed between a heated plate and the paper stock. When raised areas on the plate press against the foil, the heat releases the colored layer from the foil and binds it to the paper. The effect gives the design a vibrant metallic sheen.
Unlike engraving, where the lettering on the paper is actually raised, the raise in thermography is created by a resinous powder that is melted over the flat printed ink. The excess powder on the non-printing areas is removed and the sheet passed under a heater, fusing the ink and powdered compound and raising the ink to simulate the look of engraving. Thermography printing was developed as an affordable alternative to engraving.
Lithography or offset printing (flat printing) is produced by transferring an inked impression to a rubber cylinder from a plate and then to the paper. As the name implies, the image created is flat to the surface of the paper.
