William Arthur has been dedicated to producing innovative stationery products with exquisite designs and unexcelled quality. Timeless and elegant in design, a piece of William Arthur paper is rich in meaning and texture. It reflects the style, taste and confidence of those who choose it.
For many decades, William Arthur was located in West Kennebunkport, Maine. William Arthur has recently been acquired by and is now a division of Crane & Co. William Arthur is now located in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts. Just like the quality papers that Crane & Co. is known for, William Arthur’s luxurious papers are 100% acid free which gives them archival properties. This means that your wedding invitation will look as good on your Golden Anniversary as it did on the day that you said "I Do."
William Arthur's elegant paper is the ideal canvas for the beautiful embellishments and specialty printing they offer to their customers. The custom text that you compose for your invitations, cards and announcements will be printed in your choice of a wide array of ink colors, and in your choice of printing method: flat (lithography), digital, thermography (raised lettering), matte thermography, foil stamping, traditional engraving, blind embossing, and letterpress printing. William Arthur does it all and does it well!
What is perhaps the most traditional and elegant printing processes, classic engraving is a William Arthur specialty. When one runs one's fingers over a piece of engraved stationery, one feels the texture unique to engraving: finely detailed, raised letters with slight indentations on the reverse side of the paper. To create this look, the image is etched into a copper plate. The plate is inked, then the paper is forced against the plate with tremendous pressure, drawing the ink from the depressed areas. Engraving dies are returned to the customer and can be used again to replenish one’s stationer or to create a new look with different paper and ink.
Blind embossing is similar to engraving in that a raised image is created by pressing paper onto a copper plate. But unlike engraving, no ink is used in the process. Instead, the raised image stands on its own on the page, bringing a highly sophisticated and understated elegance to the final product.
Letterpress printing brings age-old craftmanship to classic and updated design. It was originally created by using cast metal type. Today, plates are produced with the images or printing areas raised above the non-printing area of the plate. Ink touches the top surface of the raised areas on the plate, and is transferred directly onto the paper. It has a warm, rich feel created when a plate is inked and pressed onto the surface of a paper, leaving a deep impression. William Arthur's fine papers have a unique softness that make them ideal for the process.
Foil stamping uses plates that are created with the printing areas raised above the non-printing areas of the plate. Heat is applied and the foil is then placed between a heated plate and the paper stock. When raised areas on the plate press against the foil, the heat releases the colored layer from the foil and binds it to the paper. The effect gives the design a vibrant metallic sheen.
Unlike engraving, where the lettering on the paper is actually raised, the raise in thermography is created by a resinous powder that is melted over the flat printed ink. The excess powder on the non-printing areas is removed and the sheet passed under a heater, fusing the ink and powdered compound and raising the ink to simulate the look of engraving. Thermography printing was developed as an affordable alternative to engraving.
Matte Thermography uses an alternative powder that is not as shiny as standard thermography, resulting in a matte look. It is available for most non-metallic ink colors.
Lithography or offset printing (flat printing) is produced by transferring an inked impression to a rubber cylinder from a plate and then to the paper. As the name implies, the image created is flat to the surface of the paper.
Digital printing is a fast, affordable method of printing. Digital printing is ideal for full-color projects. The digital printing process begins with an image that is sent directly to a high-end printing system using digital files, which eliminate the need for a plate.
